Tongue Thrust
What is Tongue Thrust?
Swallowing with the tongue forward & improper resting posture of the tongue can interfere with the relationship of the teeth contributing to malocclusion. Muscles of the tongue, lips & cheeks work against the natural dental structures.
Orofacial Myology uses exercises to change muscle patterns and postures of the tongue and lips. Therapy usually takes 3-5 minutes, 3 times a day for approximately 8-10 weeks. We work together with dental professionals to achieve lasting results!
Our goal is to provide you with the highest quality Orofacial Myology therapy fro adults and children, utilizing the latest research, in a friendly, fun and comfortable environment.
TONGUE THRUSTâŠ.What is it?
How do you recognize it?
Many people recognize it when their orthodontic case relapses or FAILS.
Teeth can separate vertically, in the front, creating an âopen biteâ which makes it difficult to bite into many foods.
They can also separate in the back, stopping the teeth from coming together enough for a person to chew well. The issue is usually a condition called âTongue Thrustâ, the movement of the tongue forward or laterally, helping to cause enough movement for the teeth to stop fitting together.
The Mighty tongue is considered to be the strongest set of muscles in the body for its size. Itâs real job is to help the other facial muscles widen the palate (the roof of the mouth) creating enough room for the adult teeth in children, and to help to stabilize teeth in adults. An âinfantile swallowâ usually transitions to a ânaturalâ swallow at around seven to eight yearsâ of age. Many are unable to make that transition due to allergies, sinus issues, thumb or finger sucking, low facial muscle tone, or just habit. These can change the facial shape forever.
